Here's a step by step guide to charging a car battery
- Use the right charger for your car battery. Read your car's manual to check - call us if you're not sure
- Read the charger manual be sure you understand how the charger works and if you need to take any precautions
- Remove the battery cables from the car battery terminals. Remove the negative (black) cable first and then the positive (red) cable
- Be sure the battery charger is unplugged and the power switch is off
- Connect the positive (generally red) charger cable to the positive (+) battery terminal and the negative (generally black) cable to the negative (-) battery terminal
- Some older style battery chargers give you the choice to charge the battery slowly (trickle charge) or quickly. Trickle charging is better. Newer car battery chargers are fully automatic
- If your charger is not fully automatic you might need to set a time for charging
- Leave the charger or cables undisturbed while the battery is charging
- Turn off and unplug the charger when the battery is fully charged
- Disconnect the cables - negative cable first then positive
- Connect up your battery
- Then you're good to go!
