Solving battery problems in a dragster

Our customer, Mick, has a really nice Camaro. It does the standing quarter in 9.24 seconds - one of the fastest in the country - but Mick was having battery problems. He'd tried a lithium from another supplier which worked well...until it caught fire...so he'd reverted to a couple of Optimas which are excellent batteries, but a bit on the heavy side.

We chewed the problem over with Mick when he made contact with Battery Business, and we reckoned that a Braille i31S would be better suited. The Braille produces huge cranking power, and lithiums aren't easy to measure by the same methods that we've got used to with lead acid batteries, but let's say enough power to start a very big, high compression, highly tuned motor.

Mick bit the bullet, because Braille batteries are very good, and cost a lot to build, so they aren't cheap. The installation is really nice, and Mick has saved 35kg by switching to the Braille.

The feedback from Mick says it all:

Hi Clive,

I won the Powercruise #50 Off Street Drags at Qld Raceway last Sunday 14th

The battery was great, never looked like letting me down.

I had to stop and start heaps of times, then drive slowly around the track between each race, so not much time to recharge.

We were out there for about ¾ of an hour, engine was hot, had extra electronics for the nitrous, so was a good test.

You asked before to compare it to the 2 x 750cca Optimas… definitely better!!

They would be showing signs of failure at the end of racing.

The Braille i31S felt the same putting the car back on the trailer as it did taking it off that morning.

I’ve started it about 10 times since with no driving and still haven’t recharged the battery yet.

Although it was expensive to buy I’ve spent as much on 4 or 5 batteries in the past few years.

It’s definitely solved my battery issue and I’m very happy with it.

Regards

Mick
